Back in the late 1980s, as a student consultant at the Purdue University Computing Center, I wrote some of Purdue’s first anti-virus documentation. Viruses and other mal-ware, as we’ve come to know it, have never gone away; rather, their transmission methods constantly change.

In the middle of 2009, viruses started spreading via fake alerts on the World Wide Web. I captured screen shots of a few fake alerts. Hoping to help faculty and staff spot the fakes for themselves, I wrote this article.
