When I first joined ECN in August 2007, I began watching for opportunities to improve existing documentation and to write all-new articles where needed. An article existed which provided instructions for connecting from a Windows XP-based computer to one’s network home directory … but the article needed a total rewrite. I found my first project.

This is the first of what became a series of articles providing step-by-step instructions for tasks which are common in Engineering’s environment but which aren’t necessarily in the skill sets that faculty, staff, and students bring with them to campus.

With this article, I also introduced a visual design to ECN’s step-by-step articles which I believe works well for our users, whether reading the article on-line or in print or even referencing it on the phone. (I’ll write about the specific elements of the design in a later post.)
